Struggling to describe your wedding style or choosing which style is going to be best on your wedding day? Our In-house Stylist Alanah lives and breathes wedding styling and has a few tips on how to choose exactly how to style your wedding.
Couples who know exactly how they want to style their big day from the start are rare! More often than not couples I work with have a few different styles they like and sometimes the pressure to choose just one is a bit scary - you only get to do this once after all! Pinterest and Instagram are great places to start to get an idea of what style you might like for your big day. In the early stages of planning, pin and save anything that you find beautiful or interesting, this will come in handy later.
Your venue will often inform a fair amount of your styling choices so it's best to keep an open mind and not nail down your styling plan until you have your venue locked in. As important as the look and feel of your venue is often budget, logistics and availability are factors here too. Your venue may also have certain items included in your hire that you can make use of. Using included items as much as possible such as table cloths, napkins and tableware might mean you have more money to put towards flowers and other styling items.
Once you have your venue this will really help cement the direction that your styling plan is moving towards. At this stage it's time to sit down with your lover and go through those saved instagram posts and pinterest boards. Pick out a few elements that you both love and use these to refine, refine, refine! Most couples Pinterest boards have enough styling elements to fill three or four completely different weddings, refining these down with your venue in mind will help you see the forest through the trees and help you visualize what your wedding will really look like.
When refining your wedding styling also consider the other elements of the day such as your dress, what your partner will be wearing, the style of ceremony and reception you want to hold (eg cocktail or seated, casual or formal). Allow these choices to also influence your final styling choices, this will ensure you create a wedding style that is cohesive and consistent.
You will naturally start to see colours, shapes and styles consistently occurring as you refine your wedding inspiration. Make sure to specify these once you feel confident they are what you are wanting to include. This will help influence decisions along the way such as the shape of your menus, the colours of your bridesmaids and groomsmens looks or even small details like the ribbon on your bouquet.
One sure way to nail down your wedding style is to hire a professional. Stylists are an incredible asset to most weddings and definitely worth the investment if your budget allows. A good wedding stylist can expertly tie together your styling elements, offer advice on alternatives that you may not have considered and help you visualise the options (let's be honest not everyone has a design eye or the ability to imagine a space filled with beautiful things!). Even better, most stylists have packages that range from a little bit of styling help to full blown “we take care of the lot” packages.
