How to make your florals more sustainable.

Did you know that florals can be one of the most unsustainable elements of your wedding day? Our in-house Wedding Planner & Stylist Alanah explains how you can make your wedding flowers more sustainable.

Choose native flowers. When choosing florals with sustainability in mind, local is best. Imported flowers often travel great distances to get to us here in Australia and those air plane miles mean a large carbon footprint. Choosing local produce also goes a long way to supporting our domestic growers industry.

Consider how the florals are grown. The use of chemicals and pesticides by growers can be damaging for the environment. Ask your florist about sustainable growers who use environmentally friendly methods to produce flowers. Foreign countries will often have more relaxed regulations in regards to what can and cannot be used, so again local is best.

Dispose of thoughtfully. Have a conversation with your florist about what will happen with the green waste at the end of the night. Choosing to compost where possible or reuse florals by sending them home with guests or donating them to a local nursing home of hospital are great ways to ensure your blooms get a second life.

Ask your florist about going foam free. Florist foam is a single use plastic. Ask your florist about biodegradable options or foam free ways to build your blooms.
