How to create the perfect wedding tablescape!

Tablesacape (n.) a term to describe the seamless design of your table’s centerpiece, place settings and overall decoration. A tablescape can be as simple or extravagant as you like – it’s all up to you!

Inspiration guided by intuition

Tablescaping can be somewhat of a fine art, and like any art form, inspiration is key! First, identify an overall theme you would like for your table. Look at past weddings, Pinterest and Instagram to help you define your style. Pay particular attention to textures, colours and the style of stationery or centrepiece used.

Once you have defined your overall theme, jump online to Two Lovers and search through decorative items that mirror your mood board. Use our favourites feature to save items you like so you can keep track of what you love. This is a great tool for visualising the overall look of your day (just like a Pinterest board, only all the products are real!)

Step back and compare your Two Lovers board and/or Pinterest board. Now’s the time to use your own intuition of what you believe will look best together, and work with the other elements of your wedding day like your dress, ceremony set up and venue.

Colour coordination comes first

Pick a few, simple colours and try sticking to them. If you are unsure what colours work together, make use of a colour wheel to see what colours complement and those that clash.

Use these colours – or even just a single colour for a bold statement – on varying features across the table. Perhaps including the same colour on your napkins, place cards and within your flower arrangement.

Layer upon layer

Remember how your mum used to tell you how important layers of clothing were to keep you warm in the winter? Well, the same rule applies to tablescapes: layering elements is key!

Once you have your colours picked out, start designing your essential base layer – wooden table, table cloth, table runner? Now ensure all the necessary elements are looked after (utensils and dinnerware should be first off the list!). Add to these elements by layering in decorative items, coloured accessories and floral pieces.

Choose a feature centrepiece

Instead of overwhelming your guests with a myriad of eye-catching features across the table, we recommend to keeping it simple with a single (but standout) centrepiece, or a selection of pieces that work together to achieve an overall look (for example coral, shells and candles for a oceanic nod).

A stand out singular centrepiece should contrasts your table’s main elements through colours, shape or style. With a plethora of options available, start by thinking about something your table is missing: no candles yet? Place a large, contrasting candle display in the centre of your tablescape design for the perfect artistic flair!

Height matters

Here is another motherly saying that rings true to tablescape designs: “Good things come in small packages!”

When it comes to your wedding tablescape, picking the right height of decorations and your layered elements is vital – after all, you want guests to be able to see you! Test out your design by sitting in each chair and making sure there is an unobstructed view. If necessary, adjust the height of decorations or simply move them to varying angles and places.

The options are endless - choose what works best for you

Remember, while the above points are enough to get you started on your tablescape design, it’s important to remember that anything is possible. So – as with your entire wedding planning journey – make sure you always follow your own heart to ensure you’re happy with the end product!
